Exactly like the 1990s, the 1989s are very tannic and low in acidity. They should therefore be consumed relatively quickly, except for the more concentrated ones that will keep for 20 to 30 years.

The quality is certainly uneven, but the best Pomerol, Saint-Estèphe, and Pauillac can in some cases rival the greatest successes of the past twenty years.

1989 is a fabulously successful vintage in white Burgundy, and it is undoubtedly the greatest in the Côte de Beaune in the past 25 years.

In red Burgundy, the wines have proven to be delicious, appealing, and flattering. However, most should be consumed quickly as the high yields have deprived them of long aging potential.

The great wines of the 1989 vintage:

Extraordinary wines: Château Haut Brion 1989, Mission Haut Brion 1989, Château Clinet 1989, Château Petrus 1989, Bruno Giacosa Barolo Riserva Collina Rionda 1989, Château Lynch Bages 1989

Exceptional wines: Corton Charlemagne Domaine Coche Dury 1989, Château Montrose 1989, Barolo Monprivato 1989 Guiseppe Mascarello, Bruno Giacosa Barbaresco Santo Stefano Riserva 1989, Château d'Yquem 1989, Gaja Sperss 1989
