G.D. Vajra – The Radiant Elegance of Barolo’s Highest Hills

The most crystalline, aerial vision of contemporary Barolo

Based in Vergne, one of the highest villages in the Barolo commune, G.D. Vajra embodies a philosophy rooted in finesse, verticality and a deep understanding of Nebbiolo. Founded in the 1970s by Aldo Vajra, the estate is now led by his children Giuseppe, Francesca and Isidoro Vajra, who continue a family approach defined by precision, gentle intervention, and profound respect for the living environment.

The altitude of Vergne — often above 400 metres — gives the wines natural freshness, brilliant aromatics and rare elegance. The estate has become a global reference for the purity and luminosity it brings to Barolo and to the great wines of the Langhe.

Terroirs & Grapes – Altitude, Light & Marl-Limestone Soils

The vineyards are spread across a mosaic of high-altitude sites in Barolo, Novello and Sinio, including several of the region’s most important crus:

  • Bricco delle Viole – one of Barolo’s highest and most prestigious vineyards; floral finesse, purity, aerial length.
  • Coste di Rose – silky elegance, delicate structure, refined floral aromas.
  • Ravera (Novello) – depth, minerality and an elongated, chiselled structure.

The marl-limestone soils, combined with cool nights and intense sunlight, promote slow, balanced ripening — ideal for Nebbiolo, but also Barbera, Dolcetto, Freisa, and the rare Riesling “Pétracine”.

Viticulture – Organic Rigor & Attentive Observation

The estate has long practiced a strict, near-organic form of viticulture:

  • no herbicides and minimal treatments,
  • gentle soil cultivation,
  • careful canopy management,
  • daily observation of vine health and balance,
  • manual harvesting with multiple sorting stages.

The founding idea: guide the vines without ever forcing them. The vineyard is treated as a living garden, where every gesture seeks natural harmony.

Vinification & Ageing – Slowness, Precision & Sobriety

The Vajra signature is defined by patient, low-intervention winemaking:

  • fermentation with indigenous yeasts,
  • long macerations based on each parcel’s character,
  • gentle pump-overs to preserve perfume and finesse,
  • ageing in large neutral casks to avoid any overt oak influence,
  • a constant pursuit of purity, luminosity and delicacy.

The goal: translate the verticality of high-altitude crus into finely etched, vibrant and remarkably timeless wines.

Wine Style – Purity, Finesse, Verticality

G.D. Vajra wines are defined by:

  • delicate, floral aromatics (rose, violet),
  • silky, elongated textures,
  • vibrant minerality due to altitude and soils,
  • ultra-fine, integrated tannins,
  • remarkable ageing capacity that never compromises freshness.

These are among the most elegant, poetic interpretations of modern Nebbiolo.
