Domaine Daniel & Monika Marugg – Fläsch, Bündner Herrschaft
The alpine purity of Pinot Noir, elevated by quiet craftsmanship
In the heart of Fläsch, one of the most emblematic villages of the Bündner Herrschaft, Daniel and Monika Marugg have been crafting since the 1980s some of the most authentic and finely structured Pinot Noirs in Switzerland. A discreet, publicity-averse estate, it has earned its reputation through rigorous work, precise decisions, and a rare level of artisanal dedication.
Today, Marugg stands among those quietly revered names whispered by connoisseurs: high-altitude wines that are bright, crystalline, and deeply faithful to the terroir of Fläsch.
Terroir & vineyard
The estate covers about 4 hectares located between 500 and 600 meters above sea level, on gentle slopes bathed in light and refreshed by alpine currents.
Soil composition
- glacial gravel,
- ancient sands,
- highly draining lacustrine limestone.
This distinctive combination ensures slow ripening, naturally high acidity, pronounced minerality, and the vertical energy that defines great mountain Pinot Noir. Strong diurnal shifts, dry air, and Rhine-valley luminosity further enhance finesse and tension in the wines.
Philosophy & vineyard practices
The estate follows a rigorously executed, non-certified organic approach:
- no herbicides or synthetic products,
- controlled cover crops,
- entirely manual vineyard work,
- low yields,
- late, fully manual harvesting.
Each plot is treated as a single, autonomous cru. The philosophy is profoundly artisanal, built around a single objective: allow the vineyard to speak.
Winemaking & style
Vinification follows an infusion-like, patient and precise rhythm:
- spontaneous fermentations with indigenous yeasts,
- long, gentle macerations,
- delicate pressing,
- minimal racking,
- 12–18 months of ageing in Burgundy pièces,
- very low proportion of new oak, always invisible in the final profile.
The resulting Pinot Noirs are tense, vibrant, and streamlined, marked by fine, chalky tannins. Aromas display remarkable purity: red berries, fine spices, bramble and subtle mineral lift.
The whites — including the extremely rare Completer — offer saline energy, crystalline depth and impressive ageing capacity.
Signature wines
Pinot Noir Barrique
The domaine’s core cuvée. Pure fruit, silky texture, alpine freshness and a long finish. A Pinot Noir of precision and balance.
Pinot Noir Réserve

Completer
A rare interpretation of an ancient Grisons variety. Mineral, tension-driven, deeply expressive and extraordinarily long-lived.
Conclusion
A discreet yet essential estate, Daniel & Monika Marugg embodies the soul of the Bündner Herrschaft: mountain wines that are pure, vibrant, sincere and shaped by an intimate understanding of their landscape. A reference for discerning enthusiasts seeking high-altitude, terroir-driven Pinot Noir of precision and luminosity.
