Château de Ferrand – Saint-Émilion: Historic Elegance on a Limestone Plateau
A historic estate shaped by limestone and time
Nestled in the heart of the Saint-Émilion appellation, Château de Ferrand lies at the centre of a 50-hectare park on a prominent limestone plateau, famed for producing some of the Right Bank’s most refined wines. Since 2008, the Perrin family — led by Jean-Pierre and Christophe Perrin — has brought a contemporary energy to this historic estate, while preserving its classical sobriety and the purity of its terroir.
Terroir & Grape Varieties: Finesse, Limestone and Depth
The vineyard covers around 27 hectares in production, planted on the upper reaches of Saint-Émilion’s limestone plateau and its first south-east-facing slopes. The soils — a mosaic of asteriated limestone and iron-rich clays — give the wines their natural tension, elegant salinity and a distinctive mineral signature.
Typical Saint-Émilion blend:
- Merlot (~70%) – the core of the estate’s expression.
- Cabernet Franc (~25%) – bringing freshness, verticality and floral notes.
- Cabernet Sauvignon (~5%) – adding structure and depth.
Viticulture & Philosophy: Sustainability and Technical Discipline
The vineyard is managed under a sustainable approach (HVE3-certified), favouring natural grass cover, biodiversity and careful, integrated pest management. Harvesting is done by hand, in several passes with rigorous selection, allowing each parcel to be vinified according to its specific character and ripeness.
Winemaking & Ageing: Purity and Precision
Vinifications are carried out on a parcel-by-parcel basis in stainless steel and wooden vats, with 3 to 4-week macerations to achieve both finesse and complexity. The wines are run off by gravity, ensuring delicate extraction and respect for fruit integrity.
Ageing lasts 14 to 18 months in French oak barrels, around 50% new, refining the tannic structure without overshadowing the limestone-driven identity of the estate.
The Wines of Château de Ferrand
Château de Ferrand – Saint-Émilion Grand Cru
The estate’s Grand Vin, renowned for its aromatic elegance and limestone purity. Fresh red fruit, violet, cedar and fine spice notes. Silky tannins, a precise, finely etched structure and a long, saline finish — a hallmark of Saint-Émilion’s great limestone terroirs.
Les Périers de Ferrand
The second wine of the château, offering a more immediate and generous expression of the estate. A charming, fruit-forward style, accessible in its early years while retaining the refined, limestone-driven identity of Ferrand.
Le Différent de Château de Ferrand
The third wine, sourced mainly from younger vines and plots intended for a supple, approachable style. Merlot-led, complemented by Cabernet Franc depending on the vintage. Aromatics of crunchy red fruits, floral finesse and a round, harmonious palate. An immediate, elegant Saint-Émilion that offers a clear introduction to the château’s signature.
Ferrand Blanc
A rare and confidential cuvée made exclusively from Sauvignon Blanc. Lively, taut and precise, with delicate aromatics and a firmly defined freshness — a distinctive white expression of the Ferrand estate.
Summary
Château de Ferrand brings together historic architecture, a privileged limestone plateau and a contemporary, sustainability-minded vision. Its wines combine clarity of fruit, mineral depth and textural finesse, firmly establishing the estate among the most elegant and characterful addresses of Saint-Émilion.
