Domaine Edmond Vatan — The Purest Expression of Sancerre
Located in Chavignol, at the heart of the Sancerre appellation, Domaine Edmond Vatan stands as one of the most legendary producers in the Loire Valley. Founded by Edmond Vatan and now run by Anne Vatan-Foucault, the domaine is celebrated worldwide for its precision, authenticity, and unwavering commitment to terroir.
Philosophy & Winemaking
The domaine cultivates about one hectare of vines in the famed Clos la Néore, on the steep slopes of Monts Damnés. Viticulture is meticulous and artisanal, with no herbicides and minimal intervention.
Fermentations rely entirely on indigenous yeasts, with no commercial additives. The wine is aged in old neutral oak foudres and bottled without filtration, allowing the terroir to speak with clarity and precision.
Style of the Wines
Produced exclusively from Sauvignon Blanc, the wine displays remarkable purity, laser-like minerality, and a long, saline finish. Aromas are elegant and precise, evoking citrus, white flowers, and wet chalk. With age, the wine gains in complexity, approaching the refinement of great white Burgundy while retaining its Sancerre identity.
Signature Cuvée
Clos la Néore — The domaine produces only this single cuvée in extremely limited quantities (around 4,000 bottles per year), a cult wine among connoisseurs of great white wines.
A Cult Domaine in Sancerre
Domaine Edmond Vatan embodies a radical philosophy: one parcel, one grape, one cuvée — and an uncompromising pursuit of purity and precision. Its wine, rare and sought after worldwide, is considered one of the purest and most iconic expressions of Sauvignon Blanc.
