Celler Vall Llach — The Absolute Verticality of the Porrera Slopes

An Estate Born from a Vision Rooted in Land and Community

Founded in the 1990s by Lluís Llach, a central figure of Catalan culture, and Enric Costa, lawyer and man of the land, Celler Vall Llach stands today as one of the most respected estates in DOQ Priorat. From the outset, their project went far beyond winemaking: it aimed to revitalise the historic village of Porrera and rehabilitate extreme, abandoned vineyards.

The second generation now carries the torch. Albert Costa, agronomist and winemaker, leads the estate with renewed precision: technical mastery, rigorous parcel-by-parcel interpretation, and deep respect for Priorat’s heritage.

Terroir & Vineyards — The Vertical Llicorella of Porrera

The estate farms around 65 hectares surrounding Porrera, one of Priorat’s most dramatic landscapes, where vines cling to steep, fractured slate slopes.

  • Llicorella: razor-sharp slate composed of quartz, mica, and schist.
  • Cutting minerality, saline tension, profound dark aromatics.
  • Ancient stone terraces built over generations.
  • High elevations with extremely low natural vigour.
  • Old-vine Cariñena and Garnacha among the oldest in Priorat.

The result is fruit of phenomenal concentration, carrying pure aromatics and a distinctive mineral energy.

Philosophy & Viticulture — Precision, Parcels, and Respect for Life

Every parcel is vinified as a singular entity, in a thoughtful, hands-on approach grounded in observation and precision.

  • micro-vinifications for each parcel,
  • manual work on steep terraces,
  • horse ploughing to protect fragile soils,
  • naturally tiny yields,
  • sustainable viticulture with minimal intervention,
  • manual harvesting at optimal ripeness.

The estate’s identity is shaped by pure fruit expression, the volcanic-mineral force of llicorella, and the deep structure of old vines.

Winemaking & Ageing — Catalan Tradition Meets Innovation

Vall Llach employs slow, tailored vinifications adapted to each vineyard and each vintage.

  • native-yeast fermentations,
  • gentle, progressive extractions,
  • ageing in French oak barrels, amphorae, concrete ovoid tanks, or stainless steel,
  • precise blending guided by the fruit’s natural potential.

The resulting wines are powerful yet balanced—modern in precision, deeply rooted in Priorat’s heritage.

Style — Mediterranean Power & Vertical Mineral Energy

Vall Llach wines are recognisable for their combination of intensity and mineral lift.

  • incisive llicorella minerality,
  • dark aromatics: black fruits, graphite, spices, wild herbs,
  • tight yet silky tannins,
  • deep, elongated structure,
  • a remarkable balance between richness and tension,
  • significant ageing potential.
