Bodegas Muga – The timeless soul of Rioja Alta

A historic estate in Haro shaped by artisanal mastery and Muga family tradition

Founded in 1932 in Haro, in the heart of Rioja Alta, Bodegas Muga is one of the great historical signatures of Spanish wine. Still owned and run by the founding family — today represented by Manuel, Isaac and Jorge Muga — the estate embodies a profoundly artisanal vision rooted in tradition, precision and absolute mastery of oak ageing.

In this region blessed with long-ageing wines, Muga holds a singular place: a house that has preserved the essence of classic Rioja while elevating it to an exceptional, almost obsessive level of detail and craftsmanship.

Terroir – The noble freshness of Rioja Alta

The vineyards stretch across the areas of Haro, Sajazarra and Villalba, planted on the characteristic limestone–clay soils of Rioja Alta, with layers of sand, silt and calcareous scree. High altitudes, Atlantic influence and pronounced day–night temperature shifts give Tempranillo — the estate’s flagship variety — slow ripening, natural freshness and the tension that defines the Muga identity.

Alongside Tempranillo, other traditional varieties play an essential role in the finesse of the blends: Garnacha, Graciano, Mazuelo, Viura, Malvasía. A local heritage elevated by an intimate understanding of soils and micro-parcels.

A unique cooperage in Rioja – Oak as an art form

Muga is one of the very few wineries in the world with its own in-house cooperage, where barrels, casks and large wooden vats are crafted from French, American and European oak. Each piece is custom-toasted according to the millésime and the style of each cuvée.

This complete autonomy, combined with generational know-how, allows the estate to achieve a level of oak integration that is virtually unrivalled: the wood accompanies — it never dominates. It is one of the pillars of the Muga style.

Winemaking – Mastered tradition and absolute precision

At Muga, every step of the winemaking process is guided by patience and precision:

  • manual harvesting,
  • high-precision sorting tables,
  • fermentation in wooden vats with indigenous yeasts,
  • parcel-based vinification,
  • very long ageing, always perfectly integrated.

The goal: wines of balance, elegance and depth, capable of ageing gracefully for decades. Each cuvée is the result of meticulous, uncompromising work in which no detail is left to chance.

Wine style – nobility, freshness, depth

Muga wines are renowned for:

  • classic elegance,
  • a vibrant, precise acidity,
  • pure fruit expression,
  • perfectly integrated oak,
  • a silky, harmonious texture,
  • exceptional ageing potential.

They embody the perfect balance between traditional Rioja and contemporary rigor.
