Château Les Carmes Haut-Brion – A Sanctuary of Elegance and Spirituality in the Heart of the Graves
Estate Overview
Rooted in the spirit of the Discalced Carmelites since the 17th century, Château Les Carmes Haut-Brion embodies a profound harmony between heritage, precision, and sensory expression. Independent since 1961, the estate is today led by Thomas Duroux (owner and winemaker), supported by Jérôme Cazel (technical director) and Sophie Lancray (production director). Together, they pursue a biodynamic philosophy and an exacting, detail-driven winemaking approach.
Terroir & Grape Varieties
The vineyard extends over approximately 8 hectares of Garonne gravel mixed with clay lenses — a quintessential Graves terroir. The grape composition reflects classic Bordeaux balance: Cabernet Sauvignon (~55%), Merlot (~40%), and Petit Verdot (~5%), expressing both structure and aromatic complexity.
Philosophy & Winemaking
The vineyard management follows certified biodynamic principles, with parcel-by-parcel work, natural grass cover, manual harvesting, and meticulous grape selection. Fermentations take place in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks with gentle extractions, while aging lasts 16 to 18 months in French oak barrels (around 50% new). The result is a wine of aromatic precision, silky texture, and refined mineral elegance.
Signature Wines
- Château Les Carmes Haut-Brion – the Grand Vin: a blend of elegance, refined density, and complex aromas of dark fruit, fine spices, noble smoke, and a touch of minerality.
- Chapelle des Carmes – the second wine, sourced from younger vines: fruit-forward, generous, and approachable, yet faithful to the estate’s distinctive signature.
