Domaine Taupenot-Merme — Heritage and Precision from Morey-Saint-Denis

Located in Morey-Saint-Denis at the heart of the Côte de Nuits, Domaine Taupenot-Merme stands as one of Burgundy’s finest family-run estates. Spanning approximately 13 hectares, it produces around twenty prestigious appellations across both the Côte de Nuits and the Côte de Beaune. The estate was born in 1963 from the union of Jean Taupenot and Denise Merme, two families with deep roots in Burgundy’s winemaking tradition since the 18th century. Today, Romain and Virginie Taupenot represent the seventh generation, carrying forward this legacy with precision and elegance.

Terroir and Vineyards

The vineyards are rooted in limestone-clay soils at higher altitudes, ensuring natural freshness and remarkable concentration. Most parcels are over 35 years old, with some exceeding 60 years, giving the wines exceptional depth and character.

  • Grands Crus: Charmes-Chambertin, Mazoyères-Chambertin, Corton Rognet, and a small holding in Clos des Lambrays.
  • Premiers Crus: La Riotte (Morey-Saint-Denis), Bel Air (Gevrey-Chambertin), Les Pruliers (Nuits-Saint-Georges), La Combe d’Orveau (Chambolle-Musigny).

Viticulture and Winemaking

The estate follows organic viticulture, working the soils carefully and harvesting entirely by hand. Grapes are destemmed and fermented with indigenous yeasts. The wines are aged for 12 to 14 months in French oak barrels, with the proportion of new oak tailored to each cuvée. This precise approach preserves the aromatic purity and authentic expression of each terroir.

Wine Style

The wines of Domaine Taupenot-Merme are celebrated for their elegance, structure, and freshness. The Grands Crus are distinguished by their aromatic complexity and depth, while the Premiers Crus offer refined texture and length. The Saint-Romain Blanc stands out with floral notes, mineral tension, and lively acidity, reflecting the limestone soils and high-altitude vineyards.

Conclusion

By combining a centuries-old family heritage with environmentally respectful viticulture and meticulous parcel-based vinification, Domaine Taupenot-Merme crafts exceptional Burgundy wines that capture the soul of their terroir. Each bottle reflects the precision and mastery of an estate that has become a benchmark of the Côte de Nuits.
