Château La Mondotte — A Micro-Estate of Monumental Precision

Perched high on the limestone plateau of eastern Saint-Émilion, Château La Mondotte is a jewel of just 4.5 hectares, producing one of Bordeaux’s most coveted wines. Revived in the 1990s by Stephan von Neipperg, the estate has ascended to cult status thanks to its extreme precision, biodynamic ethos, and stunningly expressive wines.

Vision & Terroir

Though mentioned in the 19th century, La Mondotte remained in the shadows until its stunning rebirth in the late 20th century. Today, the estate is defined by its clay-limestone soils at altitude, delivering wines of both power and vertical minerality — a rare balance even among Saint-Émilion’s elite.

  • Clay brings volume, concentration, and velvet texture.
  • Limestone delivers linearity, freshness, and saline lift.
  • Steep slopes ensure natural drainage and intensity of fruit.

Wine Style

Crafted from a blend of 75–85% Merlot and 15–25% Cabernet Franc, La Mondotte is monumental yet vibrant, marked by opulent black fruit, fine tannins, and a signature chalky finish. These are wines built for the long haul — yet thrilling even in youth, thanks to their purity of fruit and textural finesse.

High-Precision Winemaking

  • Manual harvest, triage berry by berry.
  • Fermentation in temperature-controlled oak vats.
  • Gentle extraction to preserve finesse and energy.
  • 18–24 months’ élevage in 100% new French oak.
  • Limited production of ≈11,500 bottles per year.

Signature Wine

  • Château La Mondotte — Profound, textured, and finely structured. A cult wine with legendary aging potential (15–30+ years).
