Château La Mondotte — The Cult Micro-Vineyard of Saint-Émilion

Perched on the limestone plateau of eastern Saint-Émilion, Château La Mondotte is one of the most confidential and sought-after estates in Bordeaux. With only 4.5 hectares of vines, this rare property, brought to prominence in the 1990s under the guidance of Stephan von Neipperg, embodies a demanding vision of fine wine: precision, controlled power, mineral depth and pure terroir expression.

La Mondotte stands apart through its singular style, at once dense, velvety and vertical. Its wines combine the flesh of Merlot, the structuring freshness of Cabernet Franc and the limestone tension typical of Saint-Émilion’s greatest terroirs. Produced in tiny quantities, they are prized for their aromatic intensity, silky texture and exceptional ageing potential.

The spirit of the estate

A Saint-Émilion Grand Cru of rare intensity, born from an exceptional micro-vineyard, where the natural power of the clay-limestone terroir remains carried by remarkable mineral freshness. La Mondotte offers profound, precise, textured and long-lined wines, marked by ripe black fruits, truffle, sweet spices, graphite and a chalky finish of great persistence.

Terroir: the limestone plateau of eastern Saint-Émilion

The La Mondotte vineyard rests on clay-limestone soils located at altitude, in one of the finest sectors of Saint-Émilion. This privileged position brings natural drainage, concentration, freshness and depth. Clay gives the wine its volume, density and velvety texture, while limestone imprints tension, minerality and a saline length.

This rare combination shapes wines that are both powerful and lifted. La Mondotte does not seek opulence alone: its identity is built on the balance between substance, precision and verticality. The vineyard’s natural slopes encourage optimal drainage and contribute to grape concentration, while preserving the energy of the fruit.

Terroir expression: clay, limestone, Saint-Émilion plateau, natural drainage, black fruits, graphite, truffle, sweet spices, velvety texture and chalky finish.

La Mondotte signature: controlled power, precision, depth, mineral tension, silky tannins, great persistence and remarkable ageing aptitude.

Wine style

The wines of La Mondotte are generally blended around 75 to 85% Merlot and 15 to 25% Cabernet Franc. Merlot brings flesh, depth, ripe black fruits and roundness of texture, while Cabernet Franc enhances freshness, structure, floral nuances and aromatic precision.

On tasting, La Mondotte often reveals an intense and refined profile: blackberry, cassis, black cherry, plum, truffle, graphite, liquorice, sweet spices, violet, smoky notes and a chalky touch. The palate is dense, enveloping and highly structured, with fine tannins, marked mineral energy and a long, saline and persistent finish.

Aromatic profile

Fruit: blackberry, cassis, black cherry, plum, ripe black fruits and dense pulp.

Spices and complexity: truffle, liquorice, sweet spices, graphite, smoky notes, fine cocoa and floral touches.

Soil expression: limestone, mineral tension, chalky finish, saline freshness and great persistence.

Overall impression: a profound, monumental and precise Saint-Émilion, combining richness of substance, tactile elegance and mineral energy.

Haute couture vinification

La Mondotte’s philosophy is based on an extreme pursuit of precision. The harvest is entirely manual, with a rigorous selection of grapes in order to keep only the most accomplished berries. Vinification is both precise and respectful, with measured extractions designed to preserve the finesse of the fruit and the elegance of the tannins.

Harvest: 100% manual, with meticulous grape sorting.

Fermentation: temperature-controlled wooden vats, with precise extraction work.

Ageing: 18 to 24 months in new oak barrels.

Production: around 11,500 bottles per year, in a deliberately confidential spirit.

Signature wine

Château La Mondotte is the estate’s sole grand vin. It expresses the full strength of the limestone plateau of Saint-Émilion in a profound, upright, velvety and intensely mineral style. Its natural concentration, ambitious ageing and tannic architecture allow it to evolve over long periods, often between 15 and 30 years, or even longer in great vintages.

Reference vintages such as 1998, 2000, 2003, 2005, 2006, 2009 and 2010 illustrate La Mondotte’s ability to produce wines of great density, capable of gaining complexity over time: truffle, noble forest floor, fine leather, melted spices and chalky minerality then enrich the depth of the fruit.
