Weingut Gernot & Heike Heinrich — The Masterful Expression of Biodynamic Burgenland

A visionary estate at the heart of Burgenland

Based in Gols, on the eastern shores of the Neusiedler See, Weingut Gernot & Heike Heinrich has, in just two decades, risen to become one of Austria’s most emblematic estates. Pioneers of organic, then fully biodynamic viticulture (Demeter, Respekt), Gernot and Heike have shaped a singular style: wines of depth and vibration, anchored in substance yet guided by tension. Their approach unites living soils, indigenous varieties and a remarkably precise, transparent winemaking philosophy.

The estate stands today as a leading force in Austria’s contemporary renaissance — a Burgenland firmly oriented toward elegance, character and identity.

Terroirs — Leithaberg, Gols & Neusiedlersee: a unique geological triptych

Heinrich cultivates nearly 100 hectares across three major zones of Burgenland:

Gols

Clay, loam, sand and schist fragments. Wines with broad shoulders, depth of texture, and a perfectly mastered ripeness.

Leithaberg

Limestone, ancient schists, mineral skeletons of great purity. Wines that are elongated, saline, vibrant, with remarkable precision.

Neusiedlersee

Pannonian climate, lake influence, cool nights and luminous days. Slow, even ripening resulting in depth without heaviness.

This subtle mosaic allows Heinrich to craft complex blends and parcel-based cuvées that reflect the essence of biodynamic viticulture: structure, energy, mineral clarity and natural brightness.

Grape Varieties — The Celebration of Blaufränkisch

The estate champions Austria’s noble red varieties:

  • Blaufränkisch — the backbone of the estate; linear, tense, deeply mineral.
  • Zweigelt & St. Laurent — aromatic finesse, suppleness, delicate grain.
  • Pinot Noir — elegant on limestone, long and fresh.

Whites express a pure, radiant Burgenland:

  • Chardonnay & Pinot Blanc — verticality, noble texture.
  • Pinot Gris & skin-contact cuvées — depth and assertive identity.

Viticulture & Winemaking — Transparency as a Principle

In the vineyard

  • certified biodynamics, living soils, controlled cover crops,
  • entirely manual vineyard work,
  • strictly limited yields,
  • a search for natural, unforced balance.

In the cellar

  • spontaneous fermentations,
  • gentle extraction ensuring finesse and precision,
  • ageing in large foudres, amphorae, cement or neutral oak,
  • minimal sulphur, no aromatic manipulation.

Heinrich’s style is built not on exuberance but on accuracy; not on raw power but on vibration.

Signature Cuvées

  • Gabarinza — flagship blend from multiple Gols parcels. Depth, amplitude, mineral tension.
  • Salzberg — exceptional cuvée from limestone soils and tiny yields. Refined power, monumental structure, tremendous ageing potential.
  • Pannobile — emblematic cuvée of the Pannobile collective, of which Heinrich is a founding member. Elegant, subtle synthesis of Gols and Burgenland terroirs.
  • Freyheit Range — white, red and orange wines from extended macerations, very low sulphur. Unique textures, pure and vivid expression in a mastered natural wine ethos.
  • Chardonnay Leithaberg — a model of mineral tension, linearity and saline elegance.

Wine Style — Depth, Vibration and Minerality

  • crystalline purity,
  • fine, precise, filigree tannins,
  • bold, expressive minerality,
  • chiselled freshness,
  • deep, saline length,
  • a clear biodynamic identity, never caricatured.

These are wines both serious and luminous — capable of slow ageing yet irresistibly drinkable in their youth.

A Flagship Estate of Burgenland
