Clos des Papes – Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Timeless elegance and the purest expression of Rhône terroir

Clos des Papes stands among the most iconic estates of Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Today run by Paul-Vincent Avril—a perfectionist vigneron and heir to a family lineage established in the early 20th century—it has become a global benchmark for those seeking wines of balance, purity and remarkable ageing potential.

Known for its uncompromising style, parcel-based vision and its deliberate absence of special cuvées, Clos des Papes concentrates its entire production into two wines: a single red Châteauneuf-du-Pape and a single white Châteauneuf-du-Pape, each crafted to express the full heritage of the estate.

Terroirs & Grape Varieties

The estate is composed of more than 24 parcels planted across a wide diversity of soils:

  • rolled pebbles – warmth, ripeness, concentration,
  • fine sands – finesse, aromatic delicacy,
  • safre sandstone – elegance, suppleness,
  • limestone clays – structure, tension, depth,
  • gravelly zones – freshness and mineral framework.

This mosaic of terroirs provides the wines with remarkable aromatic complexity and a naturally balanced structure.

Red varieties:

  • Grenache (dominant) – the stylistic core, amplitude and silkiness,
  • Mourvèdre – backbone, depth, noble tannins,
  • Syrah – colour, spice, tension,
  • Cinsault & assorted heritage grapes – finesse and freshness.

White varieties:

  • Grenache Blanc
  • Roussanne
  • Clairette
  • Bourboulenc
  • Picpoul
  • Picardan

Each grape variety is vinified separately, then blended to reflect the estate’s entire terroir mosaic.

Viticulture & Philosophy

Clos des Papes follows a certified organic approach with a strict focus on precision and respect for life:

  • meticulous manual work throughout the year,
  • very low yields (typically 20–25 hl/ha),
  • rigorous parcel selection,
  • hand harvesting exclusively,
  • a constant pursuit of balance rather than excess power.

Paul-Vincent Avril aims to craft wines capable of ageing gracefully without ever losing freshness, finesse or elegance.

Winemaking & Ageing

Winemaking is deliberately sober and restrained:

  • fermentations in concrete vats,
  • gentle extractions,
  • precise temperature control,
  • no new oak to preserve purity of fruit,
  • extended ageing on fine lees for depth and texture.

This philosophy yields wines of depth without heaviness, fine-grained tannins and superb aromatic clarity.

Wine Style

The two wines of the domaine embody a timeless and balanced interpretation of Châteauneuf-du-Pape.

Châteauneuf-du-Pape Red

  • ripe dark fruits, black cherry, plum,
  • aromas of garrigue, licorice, sweet spices,
  • silky yet firm tannins,
  • a surprisingly vibrant tension,
  • a long, subtly saline finish.

Ageing potential: 20 to 40 years depending on the vintage. The Avril style favours linearity, freshness and harmony over power.

Châteauneuf-du-Pape White

  • white stone fruit, citrus, acacia blossom,
  • a touch of fresh almond,
  • silky, layered texture,
  • a mineral, persistent, gastronomic finish.

Ageing potential: 8 to 15 years, sometimes longer in structured vintages.
