Bartolo Mascarello – The Purest Expression of Traditional Barolo

A timeless benchmark of classic Nebbiolo and historic blended crus

A true icon of Piedmont, Bartolo Mascarello represents one of the most uncompromising and authentic visions of traditional Barolo. Founded in the early 20th century and shaped by the strong convictions of Bartolo Mascarello (1927–2005), the estate became a moral reference for classic Nebbiolo: refusal of excessive modernism, absolute fidelity to historical methods, and a steadfast defense of blending great vineyards as the ultimate expression of Barolo.

Today, Maria Teresa Mascarello continues this heritage with remarkable precision and rigor. Each bottle embodies a unique philosophy: a Barolo crafted through patience, respect for Nebbiolo and a deep attachment to tradition, built to age gracefully over decades.

Terroir & Philosophy – The Art of Blended Crus

In contrast with the modern trend of single-vineyard bottlings, Bartolo Mascarello has always upheld the idea that a great Barolo is born from the harmonious blend of several historic sites. This classical approach aims at an equilibrium greater than the sum of its parts and is deeply rooted in the oldest traditions of the Langhe.

The Barolo is crafted from four renowned crus:

  • Cannubi – finesse, depth and aristocratic aromatic complexity.
  • San Lorenzo – silkiness, verticality and refined elegance.
  • Rué – floral purity, lift and mineral energy.
  • Rocche di Annunziata – structure, race and persistent intensity.

Many vines are old, rooted deeply in the marly-limestone soils around Barolo and La Morra. Manual work, low yields and constant observation are at the core of the estate’s philosophy, always seeking natural balance rather than technical correction.

Viticulture – Respect for the Vine & Living Soils

The vineyards are farmed with a traditional, low-intervention mindset:

  • manual labour across all stages of the growing season,
  • careful canopy management to preserve freshness and balance,
  • strict yield control through green harvest when necessary,
  • hand-harvesting at optimal physiological ripeness,
  • constant monitoring of vineyard health with minimal external inputs.

The goal is simple yet demanding: healthy, perfectly balanced Nebbiolo capable of long macerations and extended ageing, without the need for corrective winemaking.

Vinification & Ageing – Time, Tradition & Large Casks

Winemaking at Bartolo Mascarello remains firmly anchored in classic Piedmontese tradition:

  • hand-picked grapes from the four crus are co-fermented,
  • spontaneous fermentations with indigenous yeasts,
  • long macerations (30 to 50 days, sometimes longer),
  • use of the traditional capello sommerso method for gentle, slow extraction,
  • no barrique or new oak dominance – only large Slavonian oak botti,
  • extended ageing and bottling without filtration.

Time is the central tool: the wines evolve slowly, gaining harmony, aromatic depth and the kind of complexity that only long élevage can deliver.

Wine Style

Bartolo Mascarello’s wines are defined by:

  • noble aromatics (rose, violet, red cherry, orange peel, tea, delicate tar),
  • filigreed, elegant texture with long, refined tannins,
  • vibrant acidity that underpins their exceptional longevity,
  • depth without heaviness, hallmark of truly classic Barolo,
  • extraordinary ageing potential – 20 to 30 years or more in great vintages.

These wines are timeless, intellectual and emotional – reference points for traditional Nebbiolo.
