Domaine Yves Gangloff — Pure Emotion from the Northern Rhône

Domaine Yves Gangloff is one of the most distinctive and sought-after names in the Northern Rhône. Based in Condrieu, the estate has become known for an immediately recognisable style: sensual, vibrant and profound wines, driven by Syrah from granite slopes and the aromatic radiance of Viognier.

Originally from Alsace, Yves Gangloff arrived in the Rhône Valley, trained notably at Delas Frères, then built with Mathilde Gangloff a domaine that has become cult. Their son Guillaume Gangloff now contributes to the family continuity, in a spirit that combines artisanal precision, creative freedom and artistic sensitivity.

The spirit of the estate

A Northern Rhône of emotion, texture and relief. Yves Gangloff seeks wines that move as much through perfume as through mouthfeel: silky Syrah, luminous Viognier, granite energy, precise ageing and an almost musical signature, between intensity and delicacy.

History: a family adventure born in the 1980s

The story of the domaine began in the early 1980s, when Yves and Mathilde Gangloff settled in the Condrieu area. The first vines were planted in the middle of that decade, before the estate gradually developed across the emblematic appellations of the Northern Rhône: Côte-Rôtie, Condrieu and Saint-Joseph.

Very quickly, the personality of the wines attracted attention. Where some Northern Rhône wines favour raw power, Gangloff imposed a more sensual interpretation: polished tannins, floral perfumes, integrated ageing, deep fruit and vibrant balance. This approach has made the estate a rare address, followed by collectors and lovers of great author-driven wines.

Terroirs: granite, gneiss, schist and vertiginous slopes

The estate farms a small vineyard, generally estimated at around 8.5 to 10 hectares depending on the source and the perimeter considered. The vines are spread across Côte-Rôtie, Condrieu and Saint-Joseph, on steep hillsides where manual work remains essential.

In Côte-Rôtie, parcels are located notably in sectors such as Combard, Mollard and Rozier, with soils of granite, gneiss and mica schist. These terroirs give Syrah wines that are deep, slender and floral, combining aromatic intensity, mineral tension and silky texture.

In Condrieu, Viognier grows on decomposed granite and exposed slopes, producing white wines that are broad, perfumed and luminous. In Saint-Joseph, the granite terroirs yield more direct, precise and digestible wines, both red and white, always marked by freshness and rock-driven energy.

Terroir expression: Condrieu, Côte-Rôtie, Saint-Joseph, granite, gneiss, mica schist, steep hillsides, Syrah, Viognier, Marsanne, Roussanne, flowers, spices, black fruits and mineral tension.

Gangloff signature: aromatic sensuality, velvety texture, precise ageing, vibrant fruit, depth without heaviness, granite energy and an immediately recognisable style.

Viticulture: manual work and respect for the slopes

The vines are worked in an artisanal spirit, with particular attention paid to natural balance, ripeness and the preservation of terraces. The steep slopes require demanding, essentially manual viticulture, where every gesture matters.

The estate favours controlled yields, careful harvesting and attentive observation of each parcel. This precision makes it possible to obtain grapes that are ripe yet fresh, capable of producing wines that are concentrated, luminous and endowed with great tactile finesse.

Aromatic profile

Côte-Rôtie: blackberry, cassis, morello cherry, violet, peony, black pepper, black olive, liquorice, smoke, graphite, fine leather and spices.

Condrieu: apricot, white peach, pear, orange blossom, violet, fine honey, exotic fruits, almond, warm stone and saline finish.

Saint-Joseph: red and black fruits, pepper, violet, granite, fresh herbs, smoky notes and a frank palate.

Overall impression: deeply perfumed, sensual and vibrant wines, combining concentration, freshness, silky texture and great aromatic precision.

Vinification: precision, gentleness and fruit radiance

Vinification at Gangloff is built around the search for balance between intensity and delicacy. Fermentations are carefully managed, extractions remain measured, and ageing seeks to support the material without masking the fruit or the signature of the terroir.

Harvest: manual picking, careful sorting and a search for precise ripeness.

Reds: long but gentle macerations, controlled extraction and a desire to preserve fruit energy.

Whites: precise ageing, often in barrels, to bring texture and complexity without weighing down Viognier or the white Saint-Joseph wines.

Philosophy: build expressive and tactile wines, with dense yet never massive substance, always supported by freshness.

Wine style

The wines of Domaine Yves Gangloff are often described as wines of emotion. Their strength does not come only from concentration, but from a rare combination: intense perfume, silky mouthfeel, granite depth, fruit energy and great overall elegance.

The Côte-Rôtie wines combine black fruits, violet, spice and velvety tannins. The Condrieu wines shine through floral expressiveness, ample texture and a fresh finish. The Saint-Joseph wines offer a more direct reading of granite, with frank, digestible and precise profiles.

Emblematic cuvées

Côte-Rôtie “La Barbarine”: a charming and floral cuvée, dominated by Syrah with a possible touch of Viognier depending on the vintage. A vibrant, sensual, spicy wine of great tactile elegance.

Côte-Rôtie “La Sereine Noire”: a deeper, darker and more structured cuvée made from Syrah. It expresses black fruits, pepper, violet, graphite and strong ageing potential.

Condrieu: pure Viognier, broad and luminous, with an explosive nose of flowers, peach, apricot and exotic fruits, a textured palate and a fresh finish.

Saint-Joseph Rouge: granite-grown Syrah, frank and savoury, combining black fruits, pepper, violet and supple tannins.

Saint-Joseph Blanc: a rare and precise expression of Northern Rhône whites, often driven by Marsanne and Roussanne, with texture, freshness and floral notes.

An artistic signature of the Northern Rhône

Domaine Gangloff has a strong artistic dimension, perceptible both in its wines and in its visual world. The labels, the estate’s aesthetic and the personality of the cuvées reinforce this impression of a free and sensitive author-driven wine.

This singularity explains the growing fascination surrounding the domaine. Volumes are limited, allocations are rare, and the bottles of Côte-Rôtie or Condrieu are now among the most sought-after wines of the Northern Rhône.
