Fattoria Poggio di Sotto — One of the Purest Expressions of Sangiovese in Tuscany

Elegance, transparency and timeless refinement from the southern hills of Montalcino

Located south of Montalcino, on the hills of Castelnuovo dell’Abate, Fattoria Poggio di Sotto has established itself since 1989 as one of Tuscany’s most esteemed estates. Over the decades, it has gained a cult reputation for crafting some of the most refined, luminous and ageworthy expressions of Sangiovese Grosso.

Today part of the ColleMassari group, the estate has preserved the aesthetic that made it legendary: purity, precision, tension and a stylistic clarity that places Poggio di Sotto among the finest producers of Montalcino. Its wines are instantly recognisable for their finesse, aromatic radiance and remarkable verticality.

Terroir & Vineyard

The estate covers about 44 hectares, including 16 hectares of vineyards exclusively planted with Sangiovese Grosso. Located between 200 and 450 meters above sea level, Poggio di Sotto benefits from one of Montalcino’s most privileged micro-zones.

The soils combine galestro, clays, limestone and sand — a rare geological mosaic offering both structure and finesse. The cooling influence descending from Mount Amiata and the maritime breezes ensure slow, balanced ripening. Older parcels, some several decades old, produce naturally concentrated fruit that shapes the estate’s signature style: wines of depth, purity and remarkable aromatic transparency.

Philosophy & Vineyard Practices

Poggio di Sotto adheres to a vineyard philosophy based on respect, precision and biodiversity. Farmed organically, the estate works entirely by hand, with extremely low yields to ensure concentration while preserving natural balance. Harvesting is performed in multiple passes, parcel by parcel, to capture ideal ripeness.

Each vineyard is vinified separately to reveal its full identity. The goal is not power for its own sake, but finesse, tension and purity — a style that has become synonymous with the estate.

Winemaking & Ageing

Winemaking follows the great traditional methods of Montalcino. Fermentations are spontaneous, taking place in wooden vats, with long macerations designed to favour gentle extraction and aromatic nuance rather than force.

Ageing occurs in large Slavonian oak casks, often for up to 48 months for the Brunello. This extended maturation brings silkiness, aromatic harmony and an extraordinary vertical structure. Bottling is done without filtration, preserving integrity and ensuring great ageing potential.

Wine Style

Poggio di Sotto wines are defined by their purity and aromatic clarity. Notes of cherry, pomegranate, blood orange peel, violet and Mediterranean herbs dominate a refined and vibrant profile, enriched by subtle balsamic nuances.

On the palate, the balance is masterful: depth of fruit, natural tension, bright freshness and an elegance that comes as much from texture as from structure. The tannins are exceptionally fine, framing a wine whose finish is long, vibrant and profoundly expressive. Even in warm vintages, the estate preserves a freshness that has become its trademark.
