Comm. G.B. Burlotto – The Aristocratic Purity of Verduno and One of Italy’s Most Coveted Barolos

A historic estate of Verduno, Comm. G.B. Burlotto embodies a refined traditional Barolo style: an aristocratic Nebbiolo, floral, finely textured and impeccably balanced, shaped by the grand terroirs of Verduno and now among the most sought-after wines in Italy.

A Historic Estate at the Heart of Verduno

Founded in the 19th century by Giovan Battista Burlotto, the visionary figure known as “Il Commendatore”, Comm. G.B. Burlotto is a cornerstone of Barolo history.

Supplier to the Royal House of Savoy, pioneer of long maceration techniques and an early defender of Verduno’s terroirs, he forged a style now considered mythical: Nebbiolo of absolute finesse, floral, refined and sovereignly balanced.

The estate remains family-run, preserving traditional Piemontese practices while pursuing ever greater precision in the expression of its vineyards.

Terroirs & Vineyards – The Reign of Monvigliero and the Langhe Mosaic

The estate cultivates about 15 hectares across parcels in Verduno, Barolo, Monforte d’Alba and Roddi. Soils alternate between Sant’Agata marl, calcareous clays, sands and chalky veins, offering an exceptional diversity of expression.

Monvigliero (Verduno)

The beating heart of the estate, regarded as the unofficial Grand Cru of Verduno:

  • South-facing exposition
  • Altitude around 300 m
  • Light, chalk-sand laminated soils

Here Burlotto achieves its purest signature: silky tannins, aromas of rose, an almost aerial elegance, subtle depth and prodigious longevity.

Other Notable Terroirs

  • Neirane, Rocche dell’Olmo, Boscatto – more structured, straight and vibrant wines.
  • Cannubi Vallétta (Barolo) – a prestigious site delivering power, structural nobility and outstanding ageing potential.

This mosaic of soils gives the estate remarkable balance between delicacy, structure and depth.

Philosophy & Winemaking – Piemontese Tradition, Contemporary Precision

Winemaking follows the estate’s historical methods:

  • Hand-harvesting at perfect ripeness
  • Strict parcel selection
  • Long traditional macerations
  • Gentle extraction to preserve elegance
  • Slow ageing in large casks and old wood
  • Minimal new oak

The Burlotto style is defined by:

  • delicate floral aromatics (rose, wild strawberry, fine spices)
  • fine yet firm tannins
  • a silky, harmonious texture
  • a subtle mineral energy
  • exceptional ageing capacity
