Santenay — Pinot Noir & Chardonnay at the Southern Gateway of the Côte de Beaune

At the southern end of the Côte de Beaune, between Maranges and Chassagne-Montrachet, Santenay unfolds over gently sloping hillsides forming a remarkable mosaic of terroirs. Revered for its supple, structured reds and vibrant, mineral whites, the appellation represents an authentic expression of southern Burgundy — combining character, elegance and exceptional value.

Terroir & Origins

Officially recognized in 1937, Santenay covers approximately 330 hectares of vineyards, of which around 280 ha are planted to Pinot Noir and 50 ha to Chardonnay. Nearly 90% of production focuses on red wine.

The vines flourish on limestone and marl-limestone soils, identical to those of its prestigious neighbors. South- and southeast-facing slopes ensure excellent exposure, while elevation varies between 220 and 400 meters.

The semi-continental Burgundian climate, with its warm days and cool nights, favors slow ripening, preserving aromatic freshness and balancing structure with finesse.

Pinot Noir — Supple, Structured & Refined

  • Grape variety: Pinot Noir
  • Style: supple, harmonious and accessible, yet capable of aging gracefully.
  • Typical aromas: red cherry, raspberry, peony, subtle spice, evolving with age to earthy tones, forest floor and game.
  • Palate: fine-grained tannins, balanced structure, delicate length and elegant finish.

Santenay reds embody the southern soul of the Côte de Beaune: elegant, textured, and full of charm, offering both immediate pleasure and cellaring potential.

Chardonnay — Mineral Tension & Bright Freshness

  • Grape variety: Chardonnay
  • Style: taut, mineral and pure, with discreet oak influence depending on élevage.
  • Typical aromas: white flowers, citrus zest, hazelnut, chalky minerality.
  • Palate: vibrant tension, supple texture and elegant, saline finish.

Grown primarily on higher slopes, Santenay whites impress with their freshness, precision and finesse, offering excellent gastronomic versatility.

Premier Cru & Distinctive Climats

Santenay counts 12 Premier Cru climats, each revealing unique expressions of its terroir. Among the most renowned are Beauregard, La Maladière, Les Gravières and Passetemps.

These sites produce wines of greater depth, concentration and structure, in both red and white, with excellent aging potential.

The Spirit of Santenay

  • Authentic Burgundy, approachable prices — elegant wines with a strong identity.
  • Pinot Noir: silky, structured and charming — enjoyable young, age-worthy from the best Premier Crus.
  • Chardonnay: fresh, mineral and versatile — perfect for a wide range of pairings.

Santenay offers an elegant and generous interpretation of Burgundy, where terroir precision and timeless charm meet at the southern gateway of the Côte de Beaune.
