The Vineyards of the Canton of Vaud – A Wine Heritage Shaped by Lake, Mountains and Exceptional Terroirs

A unique wine landscape shaped by Lake Geneva, the Alps, and centuries of tradition

Stretching along the shores of Lake Geneva, across the slopes of La Tène and toward the shores of Lake Morat, the Vaud vineyards form one of Switzerland’s most diverse and distinctive wine regions. With UNESCO-listed terraces, calcareous slopes, morainic soils and strong lake influences, the canton of Vaud offers a mosaic of terroirs that produce wines with remarkable identity and character.

Traditionally divided into four major subregions, Vaud expresses a wide range of styles—from the floral finesse of Chasselas from La Côte, to the solar intensity of the Chablais, the dramatic architecture of Lavaux, and the expressive diversity of the Northern Vaud appellations.

La Côte – Between Morges and Nyon

Located to the west of the Lake Geneva basin, La Côte is the largest wine-growing area in the canton. Its gentle, lake-facing slopes enjoy a temperate climate and abundant light. The soils—glacial moraines, clay and limestone—produce wines that are balanced, elegant and refined.

Chasselas finds here a particularly harmonious expression, while the red grapes (Gamay, Pinot Noir) yield supple, fruity, versatile wines ideal for the table.

Lavaux – UNESCO Terraces and an Iconic Landscape

Between Lausanne and Vevey–Montreux, Lavaux is home to some of Switzerland’s most spectacular vineyards. Its steep terraces, reinforced by stone walls and overlooking Lake Geneva, are listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The interplay of lake, stone and sun gives the wines remarkable intensity and depth.

At the heart of Lavaux, Dézaley—between Épesses and Saint-Saphorin—is the canton’s most celebrated cru: a south-facing amphitheatre where Chasselas gains power, depth, texture and exceptional aging potential.

Chablais Vaudois – From Villeneuve to Bex

Along the right bank of the Rhône, the Chablais Vaudois stretches from Villeneuve to Bex. The vineyards develop on calcareous, schist-rich and gravelly soils at the foothills of the Alps. The influence of the föhn winds, combined with strong alpine sunlight, produces more solar wines with a distinctly mineral tension.

The region is renowned for expressive, slightly saline Chasselas and structured red wines that reflect the power and energy of this landscape between lake and mountains.

Northern Vaud – Bonvillars, Côtes de l’Orbe, Vully

The Northern Vaud brings together Bonvillars, Côtes de l’Orbe and Vully—appellations surrounding Lake Morat and its surrounding slopes. The terroirs vary widely: gravel, limestone, morainic deposits, sandy-loam soils, shaped by multiple microclimates.

This diversity gives rise to authentic wines of strong typicity, where Chasselas, Pinot Noir, Gamay and other varieties express themselves with sincerity and regional identity.

A Distinct Identity and Centuries of Tradition

Vaud is Switzerland’s second-largest wine-growing region, responsible for nearly a quarter of the country’s production. It is especially renowned for its Chasselas, the canton’s signature grape variety.

Chasselas reveals a wide aromatic spectrum here—floral finesse, delicate fruit, mineral tension—shaped by the region’s geological diversity (moraines, schist, limestone, ancient terraces). Depending on the cru, it can be airy, crisp, ample or more generous, always marked by precision.

Red wines—mainly Gamay and Pinot Noir—represent around a quarter of production. Their styles range from fresh, fruit-driven wines to more structured expressions designed for short or medium aging.

Vaud’s wine heritage dates back to the Middle Ages, when Cistercian monks shaped the terraces of Dézaley and introduced viticultural practices that profoundly influenced the region’s identity. Today, this historic legacy meets a new generation of winemakers committed to sustainable viticulture and terroir-driven precision.

Between lake and mountains, the vineyards of Vaud offer a singular interpretation of Switzerland’s great landscapes: wines of freshness, minerality and character, deeply connected to the light and contours that surround them.
