  • JOSEPH ROTY

Domaine Joseph Roty boasts one of the largest concentrations of old vines in Burgundy, averaging about 65 years. The domaine is fanatical about old vines, they have some of the oldest in France, the living ambassadors of the affinity the Roty’s so obviously feel for their land. Coupled with late picking, which further concentrates yields and with fermentation below 30 degrees, and a cuvaison of three weeks, the structure and complexity is consequentially remarkable and the winemaking uncompromising in achieving this. With a little age these wines develop wonderful aromatics with the characteristic Pinot Noir flavours of black cherry and stone fruit.  The old vine fruit contributes the length of flavour and great complexity.  Roty’s Charmes Chambertin Cuvée Trѐs Vieilles Vignes is largely harvested from vines of over 120 years.

One of the great domaines of Gevrey. Pierre-Jean has taken up the reins and seems to intent on following the families somewhat idiosyncratic, uncompromising path. “Nothing changes” as Madame Roty told us on our last visit. These are not fashion-conscious wines, everything is destemmed, new oak is relatively high, around 50% on the village wines, 60-70% on the Lieux-Dit and 100% on the Grand Cru. They are wines made to age, there is little point opening them young.

  • JUAN MANUEL BURGOS

Bodegas Juan Manuel Burgos is a winery founded in 1996 by Juan Manuel Burgos in Fuentelcésped, located in the renowned Ribera del Duero region. The estate covers 30 hectares of vineyards, primarily planted with Tempranillo (locally known as Tinta del País), spread across several villages.

The winery stands out for its old vines, some of which survived the phylloxera epidemic, offering exceptional quality grapes. Juan Manuel Burgos places a strong emphasis on natural farming practices and uses environmentally respectful viticulture techniques, limiting sulfite use in the winemaking process.

The estate’s wines reflect the unique terroir of Ribera del Duero, with standout cuvées like Avan Viñedos Viejos, made from vines aged 60 to 80 years, and aged in new French oak barrels for great complexity and finesse.

Bodegas Juan Manuel Burgos is renowned for its commitment to producing authentic, high-quality wines that truly express the exceptional terroir of the region.

  • Jules Desjourneys

The owner of Domaine Jules Desjourneys is Fabien Duperray, fine connoisseur of Burgundy and Beaujolais terroirs. Fabien Duperray has distributed some of the finest estates of Burgundy (such as Arnaud Ente, Jean-Yves Bizot, Coche-Dury, Roumier) for over 25 years, but until 2007 he had no vineyards of his own.

To produce the best, Fabien has chosen to apply biodynamics principles and an entirely manual way of working. The cost of manual labour is very high and the yields very low.
Fabien hires up from 1 to 2 people per hectare – the double of what Mme Leroy does, for the green works of springtime and summer. This surgical work, attention to the details and time spent on tending each vine is tremendous.

  • Karuizawa

Its legendary Japonese distillery was established in 1955 at a vineyard of Karuizawa and named thereof. Karuizawa somehow looks like an Artisan whisky maker. It used small pot stills, fine Sherry casks and low yield.

The market was dominated by inexpensive blended whiskies and not ready to accept such a premium Japanese malt whisky. Karuizawa was stopped production in 2000 and completed closed in 2011.

  • Kay Brothers

Established in 1890 by Australian born brothers Herbert & Frederick Kay, it is the oldest McLaren Vale winery still in the hands of the founding family.

The main grape variety grown is Shiraz (including the 1892 planted Block 6) followed by Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Grenache, Mataro (Mourvedre) & Muscat Blanc.

The Block 6 Shiraz & Hillside Shiraz spend up to two & a half years maturing in a combination of American, Eastern European and French oak barrels.

  • Kei Shiogai

Born in Tokyo, Kei Shiogai discovered the world of wine in Japan and New Zealand, where he held various positions in the industry. He moved to France in 2014, where he lived with a host family in Dijon. He worked tirelessly to learn French and, at the same time, obtained degrees in viticulture. To extend his knowledge, he then joined some prestigious estates as a vineyard worker. Passionate and ambitious, Kei Shiogai succeeded in establishing his own estate through hard work and diligence, acquiring grapes from outstanding terroirs, notably in Pommard and Gevrey-Chambertin. With his sights set on producing unique wines that also reflect the purest Burgundy tradition, Kei Shiogai closely oversees the work conducted in the vineyard. Once harvesting is completed, he personally handles the vinification. Each step is carefully thought through to produce authentic, intense and highly concentrated cuvées.

  • Kistler Vineyards

There may be no other California producer whose Chardonnays might be mistaken for white Burgundies. Kistler Vineyards was created in 1978, by Steve Kistler. He continues to oversee the vineyards, while Mark Bixler runs the business side of the winery. They produce a multiple single-vineyard Chardonnays and Pinot Noirs from vineyards from the Sonoma Coast, the Sonoma Mountains as well as Carneros. All Chardonnay vineyards are planted with the same clone enabling the vineyards individuality to surface and sculpt the wine. While not all of their whites are consistently tense, mineral-driven wines like many white Burgundies are, there is still lovely delineation, refinement and poise that is thoroughly reminiscent of old world class and charm.

  • Klein Constantia

"Klein Constantia’s Vin de Constance, a dessert wine, is one of South Africa’s historic labels; its history stretches back 300 years. It’s produced from Muscat de Frontignan grapes, harvested late after they have shriveled on the vine to concentrate sugar content."

  • Kongsgaard

Fifth-generation Napa natives, Maggy and John Kongsgaard began their endeavor in the 1970s planting The Judge vineyard on their family land near Napa. The inaugural Kongsgaard wines came in 1996.

Now, Kongsgaard produces The Judge, Chardonnay, VioRous, Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon in their underground winery—a cave dug into the volcanic rock, high on the eastern rim of the Napa Valley where they have planted a spectacular mountain vineyard.

Kongsgaard also directs the farming under long-term contracts on several perfect acres in the Napa Carneros and near the winery.

These intensely farmed, shy-bearing vineyards and Kongsgaard's traditional low-intervention winemaking produce powerful, graceful wines—vivid expressions of vineyard and variety. Production is limited to what Maggy and John, with their son Alex, can make with their own hands.

  • Kosta Browne

This recognition played a significant role in cementing the winery's reputation.

    Commitment to Sustainability

Kosta Browne is also dedicated to sustainable practices in viticulture. The winery adopts environmentally friendly methods, promoting soil health and biodiversity to ensure the longevity of the vineyards.

Kosta Browne’s unparalleled success is a direct result of their unwavering dedication to expressing the finest characteristics of California’s premier Pinot Noir and Chardonnay regions, making them a benchmark for quality in the wine industry.
