Châteauneuf-du-Pape is one of the most famous and prestigious wine regions in France, located in the southern part of the Rhône Valley. This appellation is renowned for producing powerful and complex red wines, often considered some of the finest in the world.
The vineyards of Châteauneuf-du-Pape are situated on a distinctive terroir, characterized by a mix of galets roulés (large stones), sand, and clay soils, which help retain heat and provide excellent drainage. This unique environment, combined with the region's Mediterranean climate, creates optimal conditions for growing a wide range of grape varieties.
The Châteauneuf-du-Pape vineyards are planted on the terraces of the Rhône River, with vineyards divided between stony plains and rocky hillsides. The galets roulés, large stones found in the vineyards, are particularly important because they absorb heat during the day and release it at night, helping the grapes ripen evenly.
The appellation is named after the town of Châteauneuf-du-Pape (meaning "new castle of the pope"), which was once the summer residence of the Avignon papacy in the 14th century. The iconic papal crest, with the two crossed keys, is still a symbol of the region today.
