Italy

The origins of Italian wine date back to about 4000 years. Vineyards can be found in all regions.

The Italian wine classification system often causes confusion, because some of the country's best wines are not fitted neatly into its appellation scheme.

Italy is known for the diversity and the typicality of its wines.

    Brunello di Montalcino

Brunello is the name of the local Sangiovese variety that is grown around the village of Montalcino. Located south of the Chianti Classico zone, the Montalcino range is drier and warmer than Chianti. Brunellos are characterized by rich aromatics and generous, ripe fruit, with excellent structure and fine, elegant tannins.

    Chianti

Located in the central region of Tuscany, the Chianti zone is Tuscany's largest classified wine region and produces over eight million cases a year. The typical Sangiovese flavor profile tends toward and expression of red cherries, tobacco, underbrush, and grilled herbs.

    Bolgheri

The DOC Bolgheri region is home to one of the original Super Tuscan wines Sassicaia, first made in 1944 produced by the marchesi Incisa della Rochetta, cousin of the Antinori family.

  • Piémont

In Piedmont, hillside vineyards and relatively cool temperatures are perfect conditions for the long-lived wines of Barolo and Barbaresco. They are both produced from the Nebbiolo grape and require a minimum a few years of cellaring and are capable of lasting several decades.

Barbera is a fruity wine with naturally high acidity that requires low yields to produce optimal results. The best wines come from the areas Asti and Alba.

The top dry white variety in Piedmont is Arneis, a fresh wine best consumed within a year after the harvest.

The sweet Moscato is antoher Piedmontese gem. This light-bodied sparkling wine is the perfect accompaniment to fruit-based desserts.

  • Campanie

Campania, like many Italian regions, is home an impressive array of grape varieties, some of which are found almost nowhere else on earth.

Campania's success owes much to the varied climates and terroirs that host around 100,000 acres (46,800ha) of vines.

A particularly notable name in the world of Campania wine is Antonio Mastroberardino, whose pioneering use of both tradition and innovation make him the most respected, experienced and knowledgeable winemaker of the area.
