Twenty miles south of Dijon and 4 miles north of Beaune is the delightful village of Aloxe-Corton.
General Corton (red wine) characteristics: they have a pronounded, earthy, intense, spicy, burnt cherry gout de terroir character that is unique. Perhpas a useful comparison are the very mineral, tobacco-scented and flavored wines of the Graves appelation of Bordeaux. Red Corton, because of its earthy, often dusty, tannic character, is more difficult to appreciate when young. The best examples can age as well, perhaps even longer, than the top wines from the Côte de Nuits.
General Corton (white wine) characteristics: Corton-Charlemagne is truly one of the world's most compelling expressions of Chardonnay grape. It is a big, forceful, powerful wine that usually needs 4 to 5 years to open up.

Corton-Charlemagne is the Grand Cru appellation for the white wines of the Montagne de Corton hill.
It was the Emperor Charlemagne who famously had the first white grape varieties planted on the Corton hillside.
Classic Corton Charlemagne is considered to be amongst the finest of Burgundy's whites, and is famous for its combination of fruit flavors (figs and baked pears) and mineral character (flint).
The Clos du Roi is one of the most prestigious climats on the Corton Hill and was one of the wines of choice of the French royal court from the 16th century.
Linking the Côte de Nuits with the Côte de Beaune, the hill of Corton signals a change in the landscape.
The Appellation d’Origine Contrôlée dates back to 1938.
Aloxe-Corton may be used for red and white wine with respectively Pinot noir and Chardonnay as the main grape variety.
