INFORMATIONS ABOUT THE ESTATE

Weingut Jakob Schneider – Great Rieslings from the Nahe

Weingut Jakob Schneider is one of the benchmark estates of the Nahe region in Germany. Founded in 1575 in Niederhausen, it is now led by Jakob Schneider Jr., the 10th generation of the family. This historic estate produces dry and off-dry Rieslings of exceptional purity, sourced from some of the most fascinating volcanic terroirs in Europe.

History & Family

With over 400 years of winemaking tradition, Jakob Schneider is one of the oldest domains in the Nahe. Today, Jakob Jr. runs the estate alongside his wife Laura, his sister Monika, and his mother Liesel. A graduate of Geisenheim, Jakob Jr. completed his training with international experience before taking over the family estate with ambition and precision.

Terroir & Vineyards

The estate cultivates around 45 hectares, including 18 hectares owned outright, across a remarkable mosaic of 52 soil types: slate, porphyry, melaphyre, river sediments… This geological diversity imparts great aromatic complexity and a marked minerality to the wines.

Among the most renowned sites:

  • Niederhäuser Hermannshöhle – Considered the finest vineyard in the Nahe, a steep south-facing slope.

  • Niederhäuser Klamm – A narrow gorge with porphyry soils, ideal for elegant Kabinett wines.

  • Niederhäuser Rosenheck – Perfect for refined Pinot Noirs and structured dry Rieslings.

  • Felsensteyer & Dellchen – Volcanic hillside sites with varied exposures and great finesse.

Grape Varieties

  • 85% Riesling – The estate’s flagship grape, crafted in a wide range of styles, from razor-sharp dry to age-worthy sweet wines.

  • 10% Pinots – Mainly Spätburgunder (Pinot Noir) and Grauburgunder (Pinot Gris).

  • 5% Other white varieties, grown in small quantities.

Winemaking

The estate follows sustainable viticulture practices: natural compost, mulching, soil management, and respect for the vine’s natural cycle. In the cellar:

  • Slow fermentations, partly spontaneous

  • Use of large oak casks (1,200 to 2,400 litres) and stainless steel tanks

  • Extended lees aging to preserve the unique character of each terroir

Signature Wines

  • Estate Riesling Trocken – From melaphyre soils, dry, linear and vibrant.

  • Niederhäuser Hermannshöhle Riesling Trocken – A grand terroir wine, intense and mineral, perfect for cellaring.

  • Niederhäuser Klamm Riesling Kabinett – Lightly sweet, floral and zesty, ideal with Asian or spicy cuisine.

  • Dellchen Spätlese – Crystalline purity and perfect balance between sweetness and freshness.
