Most wanted wine estate by region:
Gaby Gianini, a passionate winemaker and owner of Tenuta Castello di Morcote, is dedicated to producing authentic and expressive Merlot wines. Located on the hills overlooking Lake Lugano in southern Ticino, this certified organic estate is renowned for the beauty of its vineyard. Although Merlot has been cultivated in Ticino for about a century, the region’s red wines have only gained international recognition in recent decades.
On the estate’s 7 hectares, Merlot, the dominant grape variety, is grown alongside Cabernet Franc and Chardonnay, following a philosophy of quality over quantity. Operating entirely under biodynamic principles, Tenuta Castello di Morcote deliberately limits its yields to ensure high-quality wines, shaped by a unique granite and porphyry terroir.
This gorgeous estate is located in Bolgheri in Tuscany's Maremma.
Ornellaia is a Bordeaux-inspired blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Carbernet Franc, Merlot and since 2003 a small percentage of Petit Verdot.
Surface 75 ha
Production 140'000 bottles;
Best vintages 2010, 2009, 2008, 2006, 2001;
Other wines Masseto (this exceptional wine is produced on 7 ha of Merlot only), Le Serre Nuove (second wine is made from young Ornellaia vines ) or the Volte.
Tenuta di Biserno is a 90-hectare estate, situated in coastal, western Tuscany, hidden amongst the hills of Bibbona in the Upper Maremma, cooled by sea breezes – perfect conditions.
In the foothills of the Chianti mountains, overlooking Tuscany’s Arno River valley, Tenuta di Petrolo includes a noted winery, a medieval tower, a 13th-century church and an 18th-century villa.
Antonio Galloni (Wine Advocate, August 2009) stated, "Proprietor Luca Sanjust and his team craft some of the most beautiful wines in Tuscany at the equally picturesque Petrolo estate." The estate is focused on producing wines of the highest quality and that focus is reflected in its personnel as well as vitivinicultural practices.
Galatrona, the estate's 100% Merlot offering, was first brought to market in 1994 as a Tuscan IGT wine and has retained that classification ever since.
Annual Merlot production is 13,500 bottles.
In 1991 Andrea Franchetti had his inspiration in Bordeaux and indeed his high density, low training vines are more reminiscent of Saint Emilion and Pomerol than the rest of Tuscany.
Upon their debut, Andrea’s wines instantly got the role of “cult wines, “ for the small quantity of wines initially produced, the extremely high quality and the successful exhibit. Trinoro now produces 80,000 bottles from 30 hectares of land. What is unique to this higher volume industry is the quality of his production.
In addition to Tenuta di Trinoro there is a second wine, Le Cupole di Trinoro, which is made from the barrels that aren't deemed to be of the exacting quality Franchetti requires for hig Grand Vin and which is priced much more accessibly.
Tenuta di Valgiano is situated on the south-facing, basin-shaped part of the Lucca hills between 230 and 270 meters above sea level, where vines and olives flourish in the unique conditions of the mid-hill area.
The vineyards stand on a terrace of pebbles and clayey “albarese” rocks with a density of 5,700 vines per hectare.
Ferruccio Lamborghini bought the estate in 1968 during a trip to Umbria.
The total area is 100 hectares, divided between a 9-hole golf course, a farm and winery of 32 hectares.
The winery was founded by German-born Swiss entrepreneur, Georg Weber in the early 2000s.
He established the estate with aims to craft his very own first-class Premier Grand Cru Tuscan wine.
The first vines were planted in 2004, just outside of the Capalbio village, however, today, the property unfolds over 50-hectares – 27 of which are vineyards. The Weber family strives for perfection in every step they take.
Today, Monteverro is regarded as one of Italy’s leading Super-Tuscan producers. Their eponymous wine is also their Premier Cru. With the same proportions of Bordeaux varietals as their second wine, Terra di Monteverro, Monteverro is a complex and structured red with 24 months ageing in 80% new French-oak barrels.
Regaleali is one of five estates run by the Tasca d’Almerita family.
Tenuta Regaleali, or Tasca d’Almerita makes some interesting Sicilian wines.
Tenuta Regaleali is something of a quality reference for Sicily. For a long time it was more or less the only producer in Sicily worth knowing about.
Rosso del Conte, the future flagship of the estate, was created in the early 1970s, and made people discover the quality of the indigenous grape nero d’avola.
Sassicaia is one of the greatest wines of Italy and one of the first reds produced in Italiy to be in the image of great Bordeaux.
