Barolo Cascina Francia 2003 - Giacomo Conterno

Tasting notes

"The 2003 Barolo Cascina Francia is soft, silky and very nicely balanced, especially in its tannins, where the wine really stands out next to so many peers. Readers should open the 2003 at least an hour in advance to allow the aromatics to open up. This is a very sexy and open young Barolo from Conterno with very little signs of the challenging growing season."

INFORMATIONS ABOUT THE ESTATE

Giovanni Conterno was the son of Giacomo Contero, who was born in 1895 and after whom the estate is named. Giacomo had been producing and bottling Monfortino since the 1920s.

Cascina Francia, the source of all the grapes for Monfortino, lies at up to 450 metres in the village of Monfortino along the border with Monforte, and opposite the celebrated Ginestra vineyard in the latter.

Monfortino is not a selection of the best barrels, but a parcel selection made shortly before the harvest. The best pracels can vary from year to year. Only when their quality is significantly superior to the rest of Cascina Fancia is the selection vinified separately, in open-top vats.
