Two styles of wine are made. Zwischen den Seen (between the lakes) wines are made with a focus on freshness and fruit, fermented in stainless steel. The Nouvelle Vague wines are vinified and aged in barriques. The cuvees are labelled with numbers reflecting concentration; in 1995, for example, there were 15, and in 2002 there are 12. Within the numbering scheme, the wine with best balance is labelled ‘Grande Cuvée’.

Alois Kracher (1959-2007) was one of the most iconic figures in the global wine industry, renowned for his mastery of sweet wines, particularly Trockenbeerenauslesen (TBA) — dessert wines crafted through the noble rot Botrytis cinerea. His family estate, Weinlaubenhof Kracher, located in the Neusiedlersee region of Burgenland, Austria, became a global reference for the excellence of his wines.
Alois Kracher began working at his family estate in the 1980s and quickly became the driving force behind the production of sweet wines. Before fully dedicating himself to winemaking, he studied chemistry and worked in the pharmaceutical industry. However, his passion for wine led him to make his estate one of the greatest success stories in the wine world.
Alois Kracher received numerous accolades and awards throughout his career. The prestigious British Wine Magazine named him "Winemaker of the Year" multiple times, specifically in 1994, 1997, 1999, 2000, and 2001, highlighting his exceptional talent in creating complex and refined wines.
His wines garnered praise from wine critics worldwide, with several scoring 98 points or higher from renowned figures like Robert M. Parker. This success allowed his wines to gain recognition far beyond the borders of Austria, offering wine lovers unparalleled tasting experiences.
Alois Kracher was a pioneer of biodynamic viticulture and natural winemaking. He placed particular emphasis on the use of indigenous yeasts for fermentation and refrained from using chemicals or artificial additives. His Trockenbeerenauslesen wines were made traditionally, with hand-harvested grapes carefully selected to ensure the highest quality.
Although Alois Kracher passed away in 2007 at the age of 48 from pancreatic cancer, his winemaking legacy lives on through his son, Gerhard Kracher, who continues to produce wines with the same commitment to excellence and family traditions. The estate remains a symbol of sweet wine mastery and a key player in Austrian viticulture.
Alois Kracher’s Trockenbeerenauslesen wines are highly sought after by collectors and connoisseurs of sweet wines. These wines stand out for their richness, complexity, and exceptional aging potential. They are a true reflection of the unique terroir of the Neusiedlersee, a region ideal for sweet wine production due to its climate, which fosters the development of noble rot.
Alois Kracher left an indelible mark on the wine world. Through his innovation, respect for tradition, and extraordinary talent, he helped elevate Austrian viticulture to the highest levels. His wines continue to captivate wine lovers worldwide, and his name remains synonymous with quality, creativity, and passion in the world of sweet wines.
