Flagey-Échezeaux

Flagey-Échezeaux, located in the prestigious Côte de Nuits in Burgundy, is renowned for its two exceptional grands crus: Échezeaux and Grands Échezeaux. These unique terroirs produce highly refined red wines, exclusively from the Pinot Noir grape.

The terroir of Flagey-Échezeaux is characterized by its limestone and marl soils, typical of the region. At an altitude ranging between 260 and 300 meters, these soils, rich in iron oxides, exhibit a distinctive reddish hue. The geological diversity, with layers of Comblanchien limestone, Prémeaux limestone, and Bajocian marls, imparts remarkable complexity and structure to the wines. The shallow, stony soils at the summit gradually become more clay-rich downhill, enhancing the complexity of the wine profiles.

The Échezeaux grand cru spans about 35 hectares and is divided into 11 distinct climats, each contributing subtle nuances to the wines. Échezeaux wines are known for their elegance, offering aromas of red fruits like raspberry and cherry, complemented by floral notes of violet and spicy or earthy undertones. They are well-structured, supple, and have impressive aging potential, often between 10 and 15 years.

Nearby, Grands Échezeaux covers a smaller area of approximately 9 hectares. This vineyard produces wines renowned for their superior concentration and power. Grands Échezeaux wines boast a rich aromatic complexity, dominated by dark fruits, spices, and notable minerality. These wines are often more structured than Échezeaux, with aging potential extending to 20 years or more, developing remarkable depth and intensity over time.
