Côte de Cornas: A Bold and Rustic Expression of Syrah
The Cornas appellation, located in the Northern Rhône Valley, is exclusively dedicated to producing red wines from the Syrah grape. Known for its powerful, rustic character, Cornas wines offer a unique expression of this noble grape variety, distinguished by their intensity and depth.
The Cornas appellation covers 150 hectares, with 112 hectares planted with vines. Unlike other prestigious Rhône regions like Hermitage and Côte-Rôtie, which are south-facing, Cornas is oriented toward the east, giving the wines a slower maturation process and a more rustic profile. The steep, terraced slopes are composed of granitic soils, providing a distinctive minerality to the wines.
Syrah is the sole grape variety permitted in Cornas wines. This single variety produces wines with a rich, powerful character, and Cornas is often considered one of the boldest expressions of Syrah in the Rhône. Young Cornas wines offer a strong bouquet of blackcurrant and raspberry, with notes of violet and spice. As the wines age, their complexity deepens, revealing aromas of chestnut, truffle, licorice, and more pronounced blackcurrant.

The wines of Cornas have a significant aging potential, often requiring several years to reach their peak. It is recommended to cellar Cornas wines for at least 10 years, and they can easily age for 20 years or more, depending on the vintage. As they mature, they develop tertiary aromas such as leather, truffle, and earthiness, adding complexity and richness to the wine.
To fully appreciate the complexity and depth of Cornas wines, they should be served at a temperature of around 16°C. This allows the wine to express its aromatic nuances and its powerful tannins.
Among the top producers in Cornas, two estates stand out: the Domaine Alain Voge and the Domaine Auguste Clape. The Côte-Rôtie wine-producing area covers a surface of 242 hectares, mainly located on steep terraced slopes. The soils, composed of schist and granite, give the wines a distinct minerality and great structure. The climate is ideal for growing Syrah, the main grape variety of the region, though Viognier is also permitted and often used in small quantities to bring floral aromas and freshness.
Syrah, locally known as "serine", is the dominant grape variety in the region. It produces wines with exceptional intensity, with powerful aromas of black fruits such as blackcurrant and raspberry, accompanied by smoky, grilled meat, bacon, violet, and olive notes. Viognier, when used, contributes a floral and aromatic touch, adding freshness and elegance to the wines.
Côte-Rôtie wines are known for their complex and balanced aromas, with a beautiful length on the palate. The vineyard’s perfect location on the left-bank of the Rhône is known for its exposure to the sun, the influence of the Mediterranean, and for being sheltered from the northerly winds.
This harmony between the soils and the exposure are perfect for Syrah that, in the area’s red crus, finds the perfect expression of its strength. This balance is also reflected in the tannins that oscillate between strength and finesse.
The appellation also produces light and golden white wines that are characterized by floral notes with a touch of vanilla, and nutty aromas dominated by roasted almonds... Finally, the Hermitage cru can produce incredibly rare straw wines, made from the appellation’s white grape varieties.
The red wine, made using Syrah, can contain up to 15% Roussanne and Marsanne, and is a deep ruby red colour. As it ages, this strong wine, meaty and robust, acquires a surprising roundness and flexibility. Ageing incredibly well, the best vintages become finer and more harmonious over time, developing exquisite notes of violet, spices, and blackcurrant.
The Hermitage white wines, made from Marsanne and Roussane grapes, display a wonderful yellow colour and are of a rare smoothness. They develop the creamy, honeyed aromas of hazelnut, peach, and apricot, and may even reveal scents of iris, narcissus, and linden. They can be kept for decades.
