Discover Our Selection of Austrian Wines – A Journey Through Austrian Terroirs
Austria is renowned for its high-quality wines, often underrated internationally but experiencing a rise in popularity in recent years. With wine regions such as Burgenland, Styria, Wagram, and Wachau, Austrian wines are rich in diversity and character. From fresh and mineral whites to elegant reds, each bottle reveals the authenticity of Austrian terroirs.
Austrian White Wines: Freshness and Elegance
Austria is particularly famous for its white wines, with native grape varieties like Grüner Veltliner, Riesling, Weißburgunder (Pinot Blanc), and Zweigelt. The Grüner Veltliner is arguably the most iconic Austrian grape, producing wines that are fresh, fruity, and lightly spiced, with aromas of pear, green apple, and occasionally white pepper and citrus. This wine pairs wonderfully with seafood, sushi, or fresh salads.
Riesling, cultivated particularly in the Wachau, is another important grape variety. It produces wines of great finesse, with aromas of peach, apricot, and mineral notes of flint, all supported by lively acidity and remarkable freshness. It pairs ideally with fish dishes or spicy foods.
In Styria, Weißburgunder (Pinot Blanc) produces subtle and elegant wines with aromas of white flowers and green apple, which can also develop complexity with a slight oak aging.
Austrian Red Wines: Elegance and Structure
Austria also produces stunning red wines, among which Zweigelt and Blaufränkisch stand out. Zweigelt, a hybrid grape between St. Laurent and Blaufränkisch, produces fruity, light wines with aromas of black cherry, plum, and hints of spices. This wine pairs well with grilled meats, roasts, or mushroom dishes.
Blaufränkisch, another iconic Austrian variety, is mainly grown in Burgenland. It produces more structured wines, rich in aromas of dark fruits, black pepper, and sometimes earthy notes, with good acidity and firm tannins. These wines can age beautifully and pair excellently with saucy dishes, braised meats, or aged cheeses.
Austrian Sweet Wines: Exceptional Craftsmanship
Austria is also famous for its sweet wines, including ice wines and botrytized wines produced in the Burgenland region. Ice wines are made from grapes left on the vine and harvested once they freeze, producing concentrated and sweet wines with aromas of honey, dried apricot, and spicy notes. These wines are ideal for dessert or paired with blue cheese.
Organic and Natural Wines: Austria at the Forefront of Sustainable Agriculture
More and more Austrian winemakers are opting for organic and natural farming practices, producing authentic, environmentally friendly wines. These wines are perfect for those seeking natural products without compromising on quality and flavor.
